cARE AND mAINTENANCE

You just got your new Tay Flipper, but now you're wondering "how do I keep this thing in tip top shape?". Well here's the gist of it if you are too lazy to read the rest of it:

  1. Lubricate, sparingly

  2. Screws are indexed, disassembly doable but discouraged

  3. You don't need threadlocker, but I definitely won't stop you

  4. If your handles bind during normal usage or tuning, hold handles open with two hands, then apply moderate pressure onto pivots perpendicular to handle swing (just read it, it takes 2 minutes)

  5. Don't get it hot

Lubrication

Your Tay Flipper comes pre-lubed with an oil that is safe to use on it's brass washers, most oils are nowadays. Apply drop of high quality oil to each washer when handles feel grainy.

Threadlocker and disassembly

Disassembly of your Tay Flipper is discouraged and should be done sparingly with caution due to introducing wear to the screw/pivot index. When disassembling and removing the screws and pivots from your Tay Flipper, press the handle against a flat hard surface (pushing the pivots out of their index), while unscrewing, as the pivots and screws are indexed very tightly in the handles and can rip the handle apart if not done carefully. You can also use a clamp of some sort. The handles do not come apart, they are welded together. Disassembly could result in your Tay Flipper loosing tune faster.

Your Tay Flipper does not come with threadlocker applied as it is not very necessary.  Tay Flipper pivots and screws are friction fit and indexed into the handles to help prevent them from backing out. Loctite 243 can be used if pivot screws are constantly backing out.

How to apply threadlocker:

  1.  Remove screws from each handle with a T8 torx bit, if pivots spin, check you are on the correct screw side, then squeeze handles together while unscrewing,

  2. Apply a small drop of threadlocker to each screw, enough to thinly coat the top threads.

  3. Reassemble pivots then refer to the tuning guide below. After tuning, let threadlocker cure for 24 hours before using.

Tuning

Your Tay Flipper may need to be re-tuned over time as the handles loosen. Tuning a Tay Flipper is a little different to tuning other washer balisongs due to the friction fit pivots.

To re-tune your Tay Flipper:

  1. Tighten the screw side (turning the sexbolt will turn both sides) with a T8 torx bit until there is some resistance and handles bind.

  2. loosen screw 1/8-1/4 of a turn at time then test swing. Repeat until there is partial swing with some binding.

  3. Hold one handle in each hand with the trainer blade pointing directly up (like an upside down "T"), place your thumbs directly on the pivots

  4. Apply moderate pressure to the pivots. This makes sure the hardware is re-seated properly for a more accurate, long lasting tune, loosening your pivots will un-seat your hardware.

  5. Your Tay Flipper should now have free swinging handles, if not, back off the screw 1/8-1/4 of a turn and repeat step 4.

  6. Tighten pivot screws with a delicate hand, as small of a turn as possible, checking swing every time.

  7. When the handle starts to bind, repeat step 4. If handles don't freely swing after this step, loosen screw back a step, then repeat step 4.

  8. Enjoy your freshly tuned Tay Flipper!

  9. For everyone who skipped to the end, here is a video

Don't get it hot!

Do not let your Tay Flipper get above 50° C or 120° F as it will warp and ruin it's tolerances and will not be covered by warranty. So no hot cars, saunas, radiators, space heaters, ect. Darker colours will absorb more heat from the sun, keep in mind. The box insert is made of the same material and will warp at the same temperature, do with that information as you will.
